Sell my PS4: how to sell a PlayStation 4, PS4 Slim or PS4 Pro
Still got a PS4 under the telly? How to tell which model you have, back up your saves, deactivate and reset it — and the easiest way to sell a PS4 in the UK.
Updated 25 October 2026 · 4 min read
The PlayStation 4 was in a huge number of UK homes, and plenty of them have now moved on to a PS5 or something else entirely. If yours is sitting unused, it's worth selling while it still works well and there's demand from people who want an affordable console.
Which PS4 do you have?
Look at the model number on the label on the back or underside:
- Original PS4 — model CUH-10xx or CUH-11xx (glossy and matte top sections) or CUH-12xx.
- PS4 Slim — model CUH-2xxx. Smaller, rounded corners.
- PS4 Pro — model CUH-7xxx. Larger, three-layer design, supports 4K output.
The last two digits indicate the region and colour, and the letter after (A or B) usually indicates storage size. You can also check under Settings > System > System Information.
What affects what your PS4 is worth
- Model. The Pro is generally worth more than the Slim, which is generally worth more than the original.
- Storage. 1TB models are worth slightly more than 500GB.
- Condition. Scratches on glossy panels, worn finish and smoke smells all count.
- Controllers. A DualShock 4 is expected. Worn-out analogue sticks, broken triggers and batteries that don't hold charge are common issues.
- Noise. A loud fan can mean the console needs cleaning. Excessive noise might suggest a fault.
- Games. Popular physical games can add a little value.
Step 1: Back up your saves
With PlayStation Plus, saves can be uploaded to cloud storage: Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Upload to Online Storage. You can also copy them to a USB drive formatted as exFAT or FAT32.
If you're moving to a PS5, many PS4 saves can be transferred over the home network or via cloud storage, and some games offer upgrades to PS5 versions.
Step 2: Deactivate it as your primary PS4
Your PS4 might be set as your primary console, which lets anyone on it play your digital games. Deactivate it:
Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4 > Deactivate.
If you've already lost access to the console, you can deactivate all devices from the account settings on the PlayStation website, but this can only be done once every six months.
Step 3: Initialise the console
Settings > Initialisation > Initialise PS4 > Full. A full initialisation takes a while — sometimes a couple of hours — but it securely removes all data. Let it finish without turning it off.
If you can't get into the menus, use Safe Mode: with the console off, hold the power button until you hear a second beep (about seven seconds), connect a controller with a USB cable, press the PS button, then choose option 7, Initialise PS4 (Reinstall System Software), or option 6 to keep the system software.
Step 4: Clean it
- Dust the casing with a dry microfibre cloth.
- Use a soft brush or low-pressure air on the vents.
- Wipe the controller and clean around the buttons with a dry cotton bud.
- Don't open the console. Opening a console to clean it inside is best left to people who know what they're doing.
Step 5: Gather the parts
- Power cable (a standard figure-eight cable on Slim and original PS4; the Pro uses a different "kettle-style" cable).
- HDMI cable.
- DualShock 4 controllers and the USB charging cable.
- PlayStation Camera or PS VR, if you're selling them too.
- Remove any disc from the drive.
PS VR
The original PlayStation VR headset was designed for the PS4 and also works with a PS5 via an adapter. If you're selling one, include the processor unit, all cables, and the camera if you have it. Move controllers and the Aim controller add value. Note that PS VR2 is a different product for PS5 only.
How to sell your PS4
Doing it yourself
You can list it on a marketplace or sell locally, but expect questions, haggling and time spent packing and posting, plus the usual risk of scams.
A fixed offer from SendForCash
Describe your PS4 — model, storage, condition, controllers and what's included — and get an instant cash offer. Accept and we email a free postage label. We pay the same day we inspect, by bank transfer or PayPal. If something isn't as described, we explain and offer a revised price, or return the console free.
Packing your PS4
Put the console in a plastic bag to keep dust out, wrap it in bubble wrap, and box it with padding all round. Wrap controllers separately. If you still have the original box and its cardboard inserts, put that inside an outer box. See our packing guide.
FAQ
Is a PS4 still worth selling?
Many PS4s still have resale value, especially the Pro and Slim models with controllers. Get an instant offer to see.
Can I sell a PS4 with a banned account?
Account bans relate to your PSN account, not the console, once it's initialised. Consoles with a hardware-level ban can't be accepted.
Do you buy PS4 games on their own?
Yes, if together they meet our £15 minimum offer.
What if my PS4 is very loud?
Some fan noise is normal. If it's very loud, dust may be the cause. If it overheats or shuts down, it's faulty and isn't one we can accept.
I'm upgrading to a PS5 — can you buy that later?
Yes. When you're ready, see our PS5 reset guide and games console guide.
