How to sell an iPad, Kindle or Android tablet

Tablets and e-readers are classic drawer dwellers. An iPad gets replaced by a newer one, a Kindle gets swapped for a different model or a reading app, and the old device sits there with half a battery. If it still works, it's worth selling — and it's not hard.

iPads: what affects value

• Model and generation: iPad, iPad mini, iPad Air or iPad Pro, and which generation.
• Storage and whether it's Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi + Cellular.
• Condition: screen scratches, dents on the aluminium, battery health.
• Accessories: Apple Pencil, Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard Folio add value if they're compatible.

Find the model in Settings > General > About.

Wiping an iPad

It's the same process as an iPhone:

1. Back up to iCloud or a computer.
2. Unpair any Apple Pencil you're keeping (not strictly necessary, but tidy).
3. Settings > [your name] > Sign Out. This turns off Find My and Activation Lock.
4. Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings.

Kindles: deregister and reset

Kindles are linked to your Amazon account. To sell one:

1. On the Kindle, go to Settings (sometimes under All Settings) > Your Account > Deregister Device. You can also do this from "Manage Your Content and Devices" on Amazon's website.
2. Then reset it: Settings > Device Options > Reset (or Reset Device). This removes books and settings.

Kindle Paperwhite, Oasis, Scribe and Colorsoft models are the most sought after. Basic Kindles are still sellable if they're in good shape, but older models may fall below our £15 minimum.

Android and Fire tablets

1. Back up your data.
2. Remove your Google account (Settings > Accounts) and any Samsung account. This disables Factory Reset Protection.
3. Factory reset: Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset (Samsung), or Settings > System > Reset options on most other Android tablets.
4. Fire tablets: deregister from your Amazon account, then reset under Device Options.
