Sell my DeWalt tools: how to sell DeWalt power tools, batteries and chargers

Selling DeWalt drills, impact drivers, saws or a full XR kit? How to check your tools, deal with batteries, and sell DeWalt power tools in the UK for a fair cash offer.

DeWalt is one of the most popular power tool brands among UK tradespeople and DIYers alike, which means there's always demand for good used DeWalt kit. Whether you're switching battery platforms, retiring, or clearing out after a renovation, here's how to sell your DeWalt tools properly.

Know your DeWalt platform

DeWalt cordless tools are built around battery platforms, and buyers care about which one your tools use:

  • 18V XR — the main UK cordless range, with brushed and brushless tools. Batteries are typically marked "18V XR".
  • XR FlexVolt (54V/18V) — high-capacity batteries that work in both 54V tools and 18V XR tools.
  • 12V XR — a compact range for lighter jobs.
  • Corded tools — mains-powered 230V tools are also common in the UK. 110V site tools need a transformer.

Check the label on each tool and battery for the model number, which usually starts with "DC", "DCD", "DCF", "DCS" and so on. It helps to note whether a tool is brushless — brushless models are usually marked as such on the body and tend to be more desirable.

  • Combi drills and drill drivers — such as the DCD796, DCD996 and DCD805.
  • Impact drivers — such as the DCF887 and DCF850.
  • Twin packs and kits — combi drill and impact driver sets with batteries and a charger in a TSTAK case.
  • Circular saws, jigsaws and reciprocating saws.
  • Multi-tools, angle grinders and sanders.
  • Mitre saws — check the boxed weight is within 30kg.
  • Batteries and chargers — 2Ah to 5Ah batteries, and FlexVolt batteries.
  • TSTAK and ToughSystem storage.

What affects what your DeWalt tools are worth

  • Model and generation. Newer brushless tools tend to be worth more.
  • Kit or bare. Tools sold with batteries and a charger in a case are complete kits; "bare" tools are body only.
  • Battery condition. Battery capacity (Ah) and health matter. Batteries that don't hold charge reduce value.
  • Condition. Heavy wear, damaged chucks, cracked casings and missing belt clips all count.
  • Cases. TSTAK and ToughSystem boxes add value and protect tools in transit.

Check your tools

  1. Charge the batteries and check the fuel gauge on each.
  2. Test each tool: forward and reverse, all speed settings, the clutch on drills, the LED light, and hammer mode on combi drills.
  3. Listen for problems: grinding, unusual noises or smells.
  4. Check chucks grip bits properly and don't wobble.
  5. Check saws: the blade guard returns properly, the depth and bevel adjustments lock, and the brake works.
  6. Check corded tools: cables and plugs must be undamaged.

Batteries and posting

Lithium-ion batteries in good condition are fine when packed with the tool or charger they belong to. Pack them so the terminals are protected and they can't move around. Damaged, swollen or leaking batteries must never be posted — take them to a battery recycling point instead. Loose batteries posted on their own aren't something we can accept.

Clean your tools

  • Blow dust out of the vents with compressed air or a soft brush.
  • Wipe down casings to remove grime, plaster and paint where possible.
  • Clean chucks and battery contacts.
  • Remove any bits or blades you're keeping. If you include blades, make sure they're guarded.

How to sell your DeWalt tools

Selling locally

Tools sell locally, but expect hard haggling and buyers wanting to test them at your home.

Getting a fixed offer

With SendForCash, describe your tools — models, batteries (with Ah ratings), chargers and cases — and get an instant cash offer. Accept and we email a free postage label. We pay the same day we inspect, by bank transfer or PayPal. Offers are valid for five days after you accept.

Packing DeWalt tools

  • TSTAK cases are ideal — pack the tool in its case and the case in a cardboard box.
  • Without a case, wrap each tool individually and pad well.
  • Batteries: attach to the tool or pack with the charger, with terminals protected.
  • Saws: guard the blade, lock the head on mitre saws, and use a strong double-walled box.
